11 THOMAS STAPLETON, JR. born 1758 died 15 November 1835 in Clay County, Kentucky. As a resident of Rowan
County, North Carolina, he volunteered for service in Revolutionary War in 1780 and completed two terms of service.
As a citizen of Russell County, Virginia, he entered into service against the Indians in 1781 or 1782. Married in Rowan
County, North Carolina, to Sarah Johnson who gave the date of marriage as June 1788 in a deposition made in 1841.
At that time she also stated she was about 77 years old, placing her birth about 1764. Joshua, brother of Thomas, stated
in 1844 that he had attended the wedding of Thomas and Sarah in Rowan County in the fall of 1783. Thomas moved
to Tennessee and then to Kentucky.

12 JOSEPH STAPLETON born about 1765. Married Elizabeth Green. Listed in 1810 Census for Knox County, Kentucky,
with his brother Thomas.
13 JOSHUA STAPLETON born about 1767. He was living in Johnson County, Kentucky, in 1844 when he stated that he
would be 77 years old in December 1844.2 He was on the tax lists of Johnson County through 1846. There is no extant
list for 1847 and he does not appear on later lists so that he probably died about 1847. Married Margaret Castle,
daughter of Basil Castle. She was living in the household of her son Basil in 1850 with her age given as 80 and Virginia
as the place of birth. She may have been the Margaret Stapleton, age 70, living in the household of John and Margaret
[Castle?} Daniel in Johnson County at the time of the 1860 Census.

14 JOHN STAPLETON born 1771-1772, died about 1844. Married 1st Nancy Castle. Married 2nd Mary Elizabeth Carter,

131 BASIL "ZADA" STAPLETON born about 1801 in Virginia. He was on the tax lists of Johnson County, Kentucky, from
1840 through 1851. He apparently died about 1852 for his widow appeared on the tax list in 1853. He was married
on 26 September 1830 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, to Mary "Polly" Bowen born about 1812 in Floyd County,
Kentucky, daughter of Adams and Rhoda {Wooten} Bowen. She was widowed at the time of her death on 24 May 1856
in Johnson County, Kentucky. They are listed as the progenitors of a large family in Volume II of Johnson County
Kentucky by Mitchell Hall. However, some of the children shown in the 1850 Census record do not appear in Hall's
work so that further research is needed. They lived on Baker's Branch of Tom's Creek.

Salyers. Elizabeth, born 3 April 1819 in Perry County, Kentucky, was the daughter of John M. Williams. She died
in 1887 and is buried at Bethel Church, Mudlick, Johnson County, Kentucky.

at Peach Orchard, Kentucky, in Company G 39th Regiment of the Kentucky Infrantry of the Union Army He was
reported (mistakenly) on 5 April 1863 as a deserter "while on a scout" from Camp Lookout, Louisa, Kentucky. His
military record shows that he wwas 5' 8" high, had fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair and was aarmer..He died of
fever at home on Tom's Creek in Johnson County on either 15 or 24 or 27 April 1863. His brother, William Stapleton,
received his effects on 30 June.3

County, Kentucky, where he lived. Married about 1845 to Esther Salyer, daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Ann {Green}
Salyer, Jr. She reportedly died 6 February 1910 in Elliott County, although the death record for William indicated that
he was married at the time of his death. In the 1900 Census for Elliott County she is listed as the mother of 14 children.
Some undoubtedly died young and their names are not known. William was enlisted as a private in the 22nd Regiment
of the Virginia Cavalry, CSA, in Scott County on 4 August 1862 for a 3 year term. He was transferred to Company
A of the 4th Virginia Infantry on 4 October 1864.3 His name appears on one of the lists of Regulators (a vigilante group
centered in Elliott County) who were pardoned by Gov. Luke P. Blackburn in 1882 and 1883.

Regiment, CSA, when captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse on 12 May 1864. He was married by Thomas Horton on
23 December 1851 Scott County, Virginia, to Margaret Riddle born about 1836 in Virginia. After George's death the
family was scattered. Margaret was living with her daughter, Martha Kilgore, in Nickelsville in 1880 and is said to
have died there soon after of tuberculosis. (Note : The general consensus
now is that George W was the son of Jacob Stapleton, brother of Thomas,
and Delila Salyer, sister of Elizabeth.)

Kentucky, in 1880. On 4 August 1862 while residing in Russell County, Virginia, he was enlisted in Scott County as
a private in Company A of the 22nd Regiment of Virginia Cavalry, CSA, by H. F. Kendrick for a 3 year term. He
was one of 57 deserters captured in Russell County, gave the oath of allegiance to the United States at Louisa,
Lawrence County, Kentucky, and was released from the military prison in Louisville, Kentucky. in May 1864. He was
described as being 5' 9" in height with dark complexion, black hair, and black eyes.3

141 6 ANDERSON STAPLETON born about 1839 in Scott County, Virginia. He was enlisted at Nickelsville in Scott
County on 2 April 1862 by Captain L. H. N. Salyer [his 1st cousin] as a private in Co. H of the 50th Virginia
Regiment, CSA. He was admitted to the General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia on 10 May 1863 for
treatment of his left shoulder [apparently wounded]. On 7 July he was transferred to the General Hospital at Liberty,
Virginia. On 16 August 1863 he died of "pneumonia typhoides" at General Hospital No. 3 at Lynchburg, Virginia. In
a certification made on 23 October 1863 by Captain Jonas A. Lipps, commanding officer of Company H, it was stated
that Anderson was 26 years old when he died, that he was 5' 9" high, had fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair,
and was by occupation a farmer. On 15 January 1864, his father, Thomas Stapleton, filed a claim for the back pay and
clothing allowances due to Anderson. L. H. N. Salyer was appointed as attorney to represent Thomas. In the claim it
was stated that Anderson had neither wife nor child.3

Kentucky between 1900 and 1910. Married about 1872 to Nancy Johnson born May 1844 in Kentucky. She died
9 October 1932 and is buried at Lexington, Kentucky. One descendant has indicated that she was the daughter of John
Haney and was married to a Johnson previously and that the first two children listed below, Louisa and Sarah, are from
that marriage. He was enlisted as a private in Company A of the 22nd Regiment of the Virginia Cavalry, CSA, on
15 May 1864 for a 3 year term in Scott County by A. Fuller. He was present at a muster on 31 October 1864, but was
listed as deserted on 31 December 1864.3

indicated that he was widowed at the time of his death. They were living in Elliott County, Kentucky in 1880 and 1900
and had moved to Carter County by 1910. In 1920 he was living in Carter County with his son, Cecil, so that Eliza
probably died before 1920.

142 2 ELI STAPLETON born about 1832 in Scott County, Virginia. He was enlisted by Captain L. H. N. Salyer [his first
cousin] at Nickelsville on 2 April 1962 as a private in Company H of the 50th Virginia Infantry, CSA. On 18 April
1862 he died in Russell County, Virginia. His wife, Lydia, gave power of attorney to L. H. N. Salyer in a claim for
his back pay. Military records indicate he was about 35 years old when he died, was 5' 10" high, had a dark
complexion, black eyes and hair, and by occupation a farmer.3 Married 1st 11 January 1851, Scott County, Virginia,
to Nancy Castle born about 1827, died 7 March 1855, in Scott County, Virginia, daughter of Zachariah and C. Castle.
Married 2nd 31 December 1857, Russell County, Virginia, to Lydia Salyer, daughter of David and Malinda Salyer.
Lydia was married 2nd on 4 October 1867 in Russell County, Virginia, to Robert Shanklin Salyer, son of Samuel and
Sarah {Castle} Salyer, and an uncle of her first husband, Eli Stapleton. Not long after their marriage, Robert and Lydia
moved to Hancock County, Tennessee, where they were living in 1870. By 1873 they had moved to Pike County,
Kentucky, where they both died.

where in February 1893 they entered the N½ of the NW¼ of Section 31, T14N, R25W, about 2 miles north of Dutton
under the homestead laws. Though denied the opportunity for schooling in the aftermath of the Civil War, he strongly
believed in education. Before the school bus had made its way upon the scene and when the nearest high school was
more than 20 miles distant, he made it possible for his children to live away from home and attend high school.

County High School in Enterprise, Alabama. He also taught a short while at the Pensacola, Florida, High School after
being discharged from the U. S. Army in 1918. He was cashier of the Enterprise Banking Company from 1919 to 1925
and was a partner in a furniture business in Enterprise prior to joining the faculty at Murphy High School in Mobile,
Alabama, in 1927. He was appointed principal of Barton Academy in Mobile in 1945 and remained there until his
retirement in 1956. She received the A.B. degree from Woman's College of Alabama (now Huntingdon College) and
did graduate work at Columbia University. She taught at the Downing Industrial School in Brewton, Alabama, the
Coffee County High School in Enterprise, Alabama, and the Montgomery County High School in Ramer, Alabama,
prior to marriage. Later she taught Latin and social studies for some 20 years in the Mobile County Schools at Murphy

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Mary Ellen Lee born 23 December 1938 Tuscaloosa, Alabama, daughter of Albert Peterson
and Fannie Mae {Norton} Lee. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in April 1945 and served at the Naval Operating Base
on Guam. He received the B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The University of Alabama, M.S. in E.E. from the
Illinois Institute of Technology, and the PhD from the University of Florida. He was employed as a test engineer for
the General Electric Company in various New England locations from 1949 to 1951. He was Professor of Electrical
Engineering at The University of Alabama prior to retirement and is a registered Professional Engineer. She received
the B.S. and M.A. degrees from The University of Alabama and taught school in Montgomery and Tuscaloosa prior
to marriage. She was a critic teacher for the practice teaching program at The University of Alabama.
(William Columbus Stapleton , Jr was the man primarily responsible for
this Stapleton Family History. He worked on this genealogy until his
death on October 16,1995. I could go on for many pages about all of Dad's
interests and accomplishments. )

to John Howard Segrest born 30 July 1929, son of John Worth and Ella {Harbin} Segrest. She received the B.A. degree
from David Lipscomb College and the M.A. degree from George Peabody College for Teachers (now part of
Vanderbilt University). He attended Huntingdon College, received the B.S. degree from The University of Alabama
and was Comptroller for Converse BCM in Mobile prior to retirement.
(Uncle Howard died a year or two ago and is buried in Montgomery.)
